Certain animals simply capture our hearts, and for me, pelicans are one of them.
I have photographed many different species over the years, from tiny songbirds to majestic birds of prey, but there is something about pelicans that continues to draw me back to them time and time again.
Perhaps it is their incredible size contrasted with their gentle nature. Or maybe it is the way they glide effortlessly just inches above the water’s surface, hardly moving a wing as if they are dancing with the wind itself. Watching them never gets old.
Recently, I took a long road trip to spend some time photographing these magnificent birds. To some, it may seem like just another day of photography, but for me, it was exactly what my soul needed.
Life has a way of becoming heavy at times, and sometimes we carry burdens that others never see. Yet there is something incredibly healing about getting out on the open road before sunrise, camera in hand, knowing that nature is waiting.
As I watched the pelicans gathering together on the water, I couldn’t help but smile. One pelican was flying in toward the group, almost as if he was saying, “Wait for me!”
In that moment, a simple thought came to mind:
There is always room for one more.

It may have been a group of pelicans, but the message felt much bigger than that.
Life can sometimes leave us feeling alone, unseen, or as though we don’t quite belong. Yet nature constantly reminds me that there is enough beauty, kindness, and hope to share. There is room for friendship. Room for healing. Room for second chances.
And there is always room for one more.
Pelicans also remind me of another lesson. They do not fight the wind; they trust it. They glide gracefully over the water, allowing the currents to carry them.
Perhaps there is wisdom in that.
Maybe not every season of life requires us to flap harder. Sometimes we simply need to trust that the winds of life are carrying us exactly where we need to be.
Photography has become more than taking pictures for me. It has become a form of healing. It has helped me slow down, appreciate the little things, and reconnect with myself during difficult times.
The pelicans didn’t know I needed them that day.
They simply did what pelicans do.
Yet somehow, in their quiet grace, they reminded me that beauty still exists, healing can still be found, and that sometimes the best medicine is a long drive, fresh air, and a few magnificent birds gliding over the water.
So the next time life feels heavy, I encourage you to step outside.
Watch the birds.
Listen to the wind.
Take the scenic route.
Nature never asks us to be perfect.
It simply asks us to show up.
And who knows… perhaps you, too, will discover that there is always room for one more.
